Role of the Wiki

In 2006-2007, this site was introduced as a complimentary site to our main Mariners web site.  As of 2007-2008, this is the only web site that is being maintained.

Much of the content on this site is derived from an underlying database, which is separately maintained. For updates to the database, please contact the logkeepers.

For security purposes, information with names, addresses and phone numbers requires logging in.  For login information, please contact the logkeepers.

That said, wiki is the Hawaiian word for quick and this web site is intended to enable quick, easy communication amongst the members of our group. Any Mariner is encouraged to edit the wiki. Go ahead and give it a try!!

Role of the Database

We have implemented a relational database on the same server that is hosting our wiki.; This database contains all the critical information about Mariner activities including members, addresses, events, committees, etc.  This information is organized into a series of tables and views which can then be queried and viewed via the wiki or any other of a number of reporting mechanisms.  The fact that we are using a relational database allows us to relate the various pieces of information in powerful ways that reduce the cost of maintaining and using the information.

Unfortunately, while querying the database is straightforward via the wiki,  updating the database cannot yet be done via the wiki and we do not yet have a server based mechanism of updating the data.  As a result, we need to use the more complicated client-server mode to access the data.  There are a variety of client packages, some of them free and some of them not.  I use Navicat for working with the database because it provides a reasonable combination of features and price ($100).  Microsoft Office
